Over goeie Nederlandse Death metal demo's gesproken.

When I first saw this demo in somebody's tradelist I thought it would be cheesy melodeath with piano and female vocals. Luckily I was wrong! Despite the stupid title, Gutwrench offer some intense death metal the way it was meant to be played. The music is mostly American influenced with lots of fast thrash beats, double bass and even some chunky riffs in the New York style (on the song "Crawl"); but what makes Gutwrench interesting is their occasional use of nicely executed melodic leads, which are more typical of Scandinavian death metal. Because of these different styles blended into one, this demo holds your interest until the very last minute.

The production is excellent for a demo recording. While at medium pace, all of the instruments are clearly audible. The vocals are maybe a notch too high in the mix, but it doesn't really matter because the vocalist is killer! He uses very intense, throaty growls with a touch of reverb that will send shivers down your spine. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill "Cookie Monster" vocalist here. The drummer is great as well. His thrash beats are perfectly timed and the snare sound is cool. However, during the few blasting parts in the demo the drums sound pretty muffled and muddy. I suppose you can blame the mixing for that.

As mentioned, Gutwrench like to mix things up and include some interesting melodic guitar leads in their songs. The song "Necrosis" is a good example of this. It's one of the slower tracks on the demo, offering some nice doom-like riffing and ambitious melodies. The title track even includes the occasional acoustic guitar sections, which I have to admit are performed very well and sound chilling to the listener.

I would recommend this demo to anyone who's into mid-paced, thrashy death metal with good guitarwork. The production is near CD quality - always a plus!

Stand-out tracks: Meat Locker, Crawl
